Peter Chater became a class 5 clerk at Leamington Spa Avenue station in 1954 when he was twenty-eight years old. He had joined the GWR as an engine cleaner at Leamington shed in 1942 and progressed to become a fireman. However, on medical grounds, "I was advised to work more regular and less gruelling hours. I had been on the footplate for about twelve years and made the move with some reluctance -I had enjoyed my footplate days".
