According to Kelly's Directory, the name Towcester was written in the Domesday Book as Tovcestre', a city or fortified place on the River Tove. It was considered to have been a Roman station 'an opinion derived from the discovery of numerous coins and other antiquities ..." In Saxon times the town was continually attacked by the Danes and later fortified by Edward the Elder. For hundreds of years it has stood astride the crossroads formed by the old Roman Wading Street and the turnpike road from Oxford to Northampton, later the A43. The area was lighdy populated with litde industry.
