摘要

SHED TRAFFIC Apart from regular 'smalls' traffic for local shops, consignments of wines and spirits arrived for Hunter and Oliver, a Bury St Edmunds firm who also had premises at Leiston and Aldeburgh. Their shop at Saxmundham was in South Entrance and had formerly been H.Waller and Son. Machinery and spare parts for Agricultural Machinery Agents D. Jackson of Bruisyard, about 4 miles west of Saxmundham, arrived less frequently in open wagons and was unloaded using the shed crane. COAL In the early postwar years the principal merchant was Bowers who had a yard on the up side of the line. Ernest George Bowers set up in business at the Market Place, Saxmundham in the late 1920s and was also a corn merchant. He had been a clerk for Ben Row, a former coal and corn merchant, who had a siding opposite the down platform, and later took over from Row when he ceased trading. Bowers are believed to have amalgamated with Fred Flatman, another coal merchant at the Market Place. Other merchants included Oscar Woods (known as 'Oc' Woods), and Charles Ford of Sternfield, who had previously worked for Flatman, and (certainly until the war years) Arthur Newson, who was established at Albion Street in about 1930. All except Bowers received their supplies at the coal siding on the down side. Merchants who received supplies when Darsham goods yard was congested were James Thurtell and Philip Morphey, both of Yoxford. All merchants dealt principally in domestic supplies but the railway also received truck loads of coal for the local gas works although, unlike Leiston, outward railborne loads of coke and tar are not remembered.
