During the mid-1950s, Saxmundham and the Aldeburgh Branch were under the jurisdiction of the District Engineer at Ipswich. He had a team of Inspectors, one of whom, Charles Wright, was based at Saxmundham (having his office in one of the down side station rooms with timekeeper Albert Flatt who lived at Leiston Station) and was responsible for the line between Dealings (inclusive) and Beccles (exclusive), another inspector taking over from there and based at Beccles, with the Ipswich Inspector covering Wes-terfield Junction. Gangs were located at Westerfield (end), Beal-ings, Woodbridge, Wickham Market, Snape, Saxmundham, Leiston, Kelsale, Darsham, Bramfield, Halesworth, Offord and Brampton (end). Their hours of duty were from 7.0 am to 5.0 pm with two breaks, one between 9.30 am and 10.0 and the other an hour at lunchtime. They worked from 7.0 am until midday on Saturdays but were regularly booked out on Sundays, in many cases for work which took them away from their local area.
