摘要

At a little over 9 miles from London Bridge, Elmers End is nowadays just one of many South London stations where around 1,200 commuters make the 25-minute journey into the city; however, its origins are somewhat interesting. Come the era of railway expansion in the mid-19th century, this pleasant area of Kentish countryside bordering the London environs was soon reached as enterprising companies were successful in their promotions. Despite the locality itself having little to offer at that time, the terrain was suited to reaching far more lucrative goals. The dissatisfaction felt by the South Eastern Railway at having to share the London and Croydon Railway with the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway was also instrumental in the SER's desire to build a much shorter and faster route between London and Dover than its 'long way round' via Redhill. Initial attempts to reach Tonbridge with an independent and shorter line to Oxted were frustrated by Parliament, whereby the SER kept a watchful eye on any developments which might further its aim.
