Tylwch, circa - well, the dating is interesting. This photograph appears to show the then-new signalling and (to the right in this view) the down platform as commissioned in June 1899. But the locomotive was No. 23, an 0-4-2 tender loco built by Kitson & Co. of Leeds in 1864, their works number 1239, and acquired by the Cambrian Railways from the Mid Wales Railway (their No. 3) on 2nd April 1888 (when the Cambrian took over the operation of the MWR). This locomotive was withdrawn in December 1896, more than two years before the altered arrangements bringing the down platform into use. The platform had been shown on plans for the new layout in 1891, but should not have been used for passenger trains since the line that served it was only a siding, with no point locks on the trap points. Yet the platform on which the men stood had all the appearance of being laid out for, and used by, passengers. Why else would there be a pair of bench seats and neat gardens? And three of the men on the platform appear to be workmen painting and tidying up. This was probably a posed view, so the signalman had placed the down home signal (lever 2) to danger to protect the train, even though the rear of the train was still foul of the points protected by the signal. The very barren countryside in this area is amply demonstrated in this view from C. C. Green's collection.
