摘要

Every summer, high temperatures and severe thunderstorms make headlines as major causes of power outages across the country. Year after year there is another scourge that results in hundreds of outages across North America; ANIMALS. The incursion of squirrels, raccoons, snakes and other climbing animals into electrical substations results in outages that leave thousands without power and cost millions in damaged equipment and labor costs. For many substation operators, the problem is getting worse. Over the past two years, mild winters have led to rising animal populations, which has exacerbated a long-time challenge for power producers. A few examples provide some context on the severity of the animal incursion problem: 1. During 2015, squirrels caused 560 power outages - in the state of Montana alone. 2. Wildlife near power equipment is the most common cause of outages at public power utilities, according to the American Public Power Association's latest annual survey on system reliability. 3. During one single event, a raccoon caused a power outage at a St. Augustine (FL) utility station that led to a sewage backup, ultimately resulting in 60,000 gallons of untreated sewage flowing into the San Sebastian River. While many power producers continue to grapple with the expensive reality of animal incursions at substations, others have turned to an innovative solution. A substation patented animal deterrent fencing system from TransGard that delivers a humane but effective electric shock which prevents squirrels, raccoons, snakes, and other climbing animals from damaging expensive equipment and causing serious outages. Substations in every region of North America have turned to this fencing system for protection, a testament to a 20-year track record of effectiveness.
