Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems have become a ubiquitous throughout utilities because municipalities, investor-owned utilities, and rural electric coops reap the benefits that they provide. These benefits include quicker access to data, allowing better decisions to be made in less time, often preventing outages or at least limiting their duration. While SCADA systems are essential to monitoring operating conditions and exchanging data between the control room and remote sites and equipment, they must be secured against intrusion. This task can seem daunting to many utilities-particularly those without a large information technology (IT) staff. One of the reasons safeguarding networks and systems can be problematic is that many industries have created their own security standards and guidelines. These standards are often fragmented into various areas of security, such as physical and IT security, but generally do not cover the entire security spectrum.
