Clearly, the grid has been "smart" for decades. SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) and energy management systems (EMS) for generation and transmission have been widely used for a half-century. Distribution SCADA and automation have been nearly ubiquitous since the early 1980s. Renewable energy (mostly utility-scale wind farms) has been integrated since the '80s. Automated meter reading (AMR) and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) haven't changed significantly in two decades. And interval metering/demand side management traces its roots to time-of-use (TOU) metering projects in the mid-1970s. So, what's actually new about the Smart Grid? Systems today are being linked by communication networks as a "system of systems", exchanging data to optimize grid operations. This interconnection via data networks produces the ability to control the grid in a more optimal, efficient, secure and reliable manner than the old islands of automation. Establishing those interconnections will create truly massive information technology (IT) infrastructures.
