The implementation of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) brings the possibility of using interval data for billing residential customers. Interval data billing, summing the individual intervals to calculate total consumption, is predominantly used in billing larger commercial and industrial customers. However, the majority of utilities bill residential customers from a single, monthly, register read. The transition from register billing to interval billing can require significant changes to existing customer information system (CIS) billing engines, validation rules and billing processes.
