Customer ignorance is the biggest barrier to transforming today's dumb grid into tomorrow's smart grid, according to a survey of U.S. electric utilities. Black & Veatch, an engineering and design company from Overland, KS, published its fifth annual survey of the electric utility industry this past June, which found that a lack of knowledge-and interest-from consumers is impeding smart grid advancements. The smart grid is supposed to be "interactive," which explains why a lack of knowledge and interest would be the primary-and critical-concern for U.S. electrical utilities.
