A QUESTION POPPED INTO MY HEAD WHILE SCANNING SOME OF OUR ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY'SMAGAZINES, "Are North Americas electrical utilities really adamant on implementingtheir smart grid plan?" I mean, Electricity Today Magazine focuses on the latest smart-grid developments—which continues this issue—but what are North American utilities really doing to make the smart grid a reality? My question was answered, so to speak, in a recent Newton-Evans study entitled, "The Worldwide Smart Grid Market in 2011: A Reality Check and Five Year Outlook Through 2015". In the study, one of the biggest smart grid technologies over the last few years has been smart meters. Eighty-four percent of all U.S. utilities surveyed indicated that smart meters are a part of their smart grid plan. In Canada, the percentage rate was lower (80 percent).
