The power systems industry is in the midst of challenges that will rival those of any period in its history - summoning difficult decisions to be made that will challenge a corporation's leadership, innovation, and customer service.rnIncreased growth in consumer demand, in conjunction with an aging infrastructure, has resulted in an increased expansion of power generation capacity, at a time when generation options pose challenging combinations of inflated material/labor costs, volatile fuel prices, and environmental consequences. The legacy infrastructure -equipment without communication capabilities - will ultimately need to be replaced with "intelligent" equipment - devices with communication capabilities - that can accommodate a growing percentage of intermittent renewable resources, distributed generation and storage, energy efficiency, demand response, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
