There are four main applications for solar PV power systems: grid-connected centralized power stations, grid-connected distributed PV, off-grid building power systems, and off-grid PV-DC loads and appliances. Off-grid PV power systems - those that are not connected to a utility electricity network - dominated installations until the late 1990s, but they now represent a minor fraction of the global PV market. They provide power to a wide range of relatively low-power loads such as telecommunication, battery charging, lighting, refrigeration, and water pumping.
