The Chinese government took drastic steps leading up to August 8, restricting vehicular traffic in the capital and shutting down factories that produced emissions. Despite these actions, there remained some smog surrounding Beijing for most of the Olympics, and the media underlined the explosion of industrial pollutants in China, naming coal-generation as one of the major culprits.
