For many electric utilities, especially those in a deregulated market, Asset Management is a new concept. Its purpose is to help manage the electric system's assets over their life cycle, while maximizing asset reliability, balancing customer demand, ensuring workplace safety and giving value to the shareholder, and all this needs to be done under the watchful eye of the industry regulator. Keeping the lights on above all else was the philosophy that guided plant maintenance and capital investment in local distribution companies in the past. Today, utilities are still required to deliver a safe, reliable source of electricity but are required now to be more cost-effective in using labour, tools and capital. Under the new electricity market model, distribution companies must provide a reliable source of electricity to the customer, a reasonable return on equity to the shareholder and meet rigorous regulatory performance targets.
