The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) and many utility companies remind homeowners frequently about the dangers associated with trees planted too close to power lines. Power outages can occur and dangerous electric shock hazards can develop if tree limbs touch electric wires or if branches fall onto the utility line. The widespread power outage in the Northeast U.S. and Canada, and again in the Washington, D.C. area after Hurricane Isabel, illustrate the major impact falling trees and tree limbs can have on our power grid. But how does that impact linemen and utility workers? Responsibility for tree-trimming around power lines varies by region. Some utilities give their linemen some training in tree-trimming. Others, like Orange Rockland in Pike County, N.Y., and Pepco in the Washington, D.C region, contract all tree-trimming out.
