For nearly 25 years innovative transformer manufacturers, utilities and research organizations such as EPRI have been installing fiber optic point sensors to monitor winding temperature of power transformers on an experimental basis. This was motivated by the desire to know true hotspot temperature by sensing directly at the windings rather than inferring it from surrounding oil temperature. Fiber optic hotspot monitoring provides a direct, accurate and real time measurement of winding temperatures enabling utilities to safely bring the transformer through the overload status during transient loading, thereby providing a dynamic and reliable asset management tool. Knowledge of accurate winding temperature in real time allows utilities to achieve 5-20 per cent additional loading without fear of damage to transformer insulation.
