In November of 2003, the Consortium for Electric Infrastructure to Support a Digital Society (CEIDS) awarded a contract for the first step toward what can arguably be called the Grid of the Future. CEIDS, a program administered by EPRI, is an ambitious initiative "to transform the current infrastructure into a new electric delivery system that integrates advances in communications, computing and electronics to meet the energy needs of the digital society," according to the program web site. The IntelliGrid initiative began with a focus on grid communications and has since expanded to include power system applications and computing architectures aptly known as Fast Simulation and Modeling (FSM).
