Mechanical Sound amplifies recent international scholarship into the materialization of sound by creating a fascinating 'tragic' history of noise that has beset modernity.1 Examining four critical episodes in Western society between the late 19th and late 20th centuries, Karin Bijsterveld shows how noise is historically constructed by modern approaches to technological, public, economic, health, environmental and legislative cultures.rnEmbedded in this approach is her concern that mechanical noise continues to be a pressing issue for contemporary societies:rnWe have been trying to create islands of silence, yet have left a sea of sound to be fiercely discussed.
