摘要

Paul Oliver's book is a compendium of 24 essays representing his evolving thought about vernacular architecture over a quarter of a century, 1978-2003. The overall message that weaves throughout these very varied essays is that professional architects, planners and designers must be trained in vernacular principles in order to safeguard indigenous cultures. People in the developing world create and inhabit buildings in communities that share and express a common culture. Their buildings in every way reflect their belief systems. When architects who are trained in Western rationalist thinking come into a vernacular setting to produce, replace, or repair housing, especially in a time of crisis such as after an earthquake, their inclination is often to tear down existing buildings, ignore local traditions, and replace dwellings with an anonymous grid of serviced shells. But the people who are moved into these shells are unable to preserve their culture because so many of their beliefs are violated - everything from the spatial relations derived from kinship, to hierarchies of authority given to younger and older or male and female residents, to the symbolic meanings of forms. To ignore these local meanings is to destroy the cultures that bind people into living communities.
