US General William Tecumseh Sherman is credited with coining the phrase 'War is hell' after his experiences in the American Civil War and the war against Native Americans. The Duke of Wellington, upon surveying the battlefield at Waterloo in 1815, reportedly remarked: 'A victory is the greatest tragedy in the world, except a defeat'. These nineteenth-century quotations were uttered before nuclear holocausts and before massacring civilians were explained away as 'collateral damage'. Despite the hopes of generation after generation that the 'War to end all wars' was over or that there truly was 'Peace in our time', the dusk of the 20th century and the dawn of the 21st century witnessed never-ending conflict and atrocities direct to televisions and websites.
