Over the last 50 years or so, environmental acoustic engineers have been preoccupied with making objective measurements of noise. Noise is generally understood to be unwanted sound. Pioneering acousticians such as Beranek (1960) and Schultz (1982) have written seminal texts with titles such as Noise Reduction and Community Noise Rating which introduced a plethora of acoustical indices to evaluate the various complex features of noise.
