Examiningthe nature of architecture and landscape in one East Coast region from colonial settlement to the early nineteenth century, The Chesapeake House, edited by Cary Carson and Carl R. Lounsbury, is an accessible and beautifully designed volume that presents the work of an interdisciplinary team of historians, archeologists, conservators, and curators working for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation overthe past two decades. Moving well beyond the original site of Williamsburg to survey other extant buildings across Maryland and eastern Virginia, their work yields insights into the development of a distinct regional architecture and culture overtime, grounded in the deep analysis of a wide variety of buildings and landscapes.
