摘要

The Springfield Cos Machine originated as the outgrowth of an archaeological project at Henry Clay's Ashland Estate in Lexington, Kentucky, where the remains of a Springfield machine were discovered. Donald W. Line-baugh, its author and the director of the historic preservation program at the University of Maryland, ultimately visited numerous sites throughout the country where such machines ortheir remnants still existed. Linebaugh also delved deeply into the documentary record of the nineteenth-century lighting industry, the details of gas lighting machinery, and the Gilbert and Barker Company, manufacturer of the Springfield machinery. The resultant volume, which was clearly a labor of love, reflects Linebaugh's extensive research and fascination with the subject matter.
