摘要

The year 2012 saw the deaths of Charles Lockwood, author of Bricks and Brown-stones, and Everett Ortner, a cofounder of the Brownstone Revival Committee. Both were key figures in the phenomenon that Suleiman Osman characterizes as the "invention of Brownstone Brooklyn." Osman, who grew up in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn, gives us a timely and compelling history that explores the political, social, and intellectual currents that gave rise to the forms of Brooklyn's neighborhoods. Brownstone Brooklyn, in Osman's definition, is a geographic place that extends along the East River waterfront from South Brooklyn (today's Sunset Park neighborhood) to Newtown Creek, which forms the border between Brooklyn and Queens. It extends across the borough roughly following the glacial terminal moraine (which forms the high point of Prospect Park) to the Queens border.
