摘要

Despite the sweeping changes that have occurred in retail distribution throughout the Western world and in many other parts of the globe over the past two centuries, old patterns continue to persist, as well. Even in the United States, where radical shifts in retailing and in the places where retailing is conducted have probably been the most intense since 1900, traditional forms can be found in some number. Public markets, for example, both municipally and privately owned, still exist in more than a few cities and in some cases are enjoying a revival to the point where they are again catalysts for other businesses. The trend is especially pronounced if one includes the plethora of farmers' markets that now operate on a regular basis in hundreds of urban neighborhoods and rural communities alike, intensifying the resurgence of what is now termed the farm-to-table method of distribution.
