摘要

Published in Palgrave Macmillan's Planning, Environment, Cities series, this book is 'primarily aimed at students and practitioners of planning and such related professionals'. However, Ali Madanipour goes a step further by 'work[ing] towards developing a theoretical and analytical perspective with which to understand and transform urban design' (p. 2). In so doing, he questions current urban design orthodoxies. He calls for a deeper understanding of why cities change and how urban design can play a role in that process of change. He challenges the concepts of neighbourhood planning, public space, urban governance, democracy and freedom in space. In this respect, the book claims to have 'critical engagement with theory and practice of urban design' (p. 8). The ways in which the book engages with practice are not direct. Rather it helps to understand and assess practice, as the frequent reference to Urban Task Force in the book implies.
