Morphological analysis is used as a tool to provide a better understanding of metropolitan form. The article traces the urban transect to its roots in biogeography and applies transects as a longitudinal sampling method with reduced dimensionality to the design of the metropolitan landscape. We select cross-sections of metropolitan regions, describe and analyze the geographic distribution of metropolitan form and classify the conditions found. Using two metropolitan areas as examples - the San Francisco Bay Area and Guangzhou in China's Pearl River Delta - the paper demonstrates how conditions at select locations can be represented through a range of qualitative and quantitative techniques. The transect method reveals that the morphology of metropolitan form more frequently follows a lattice-like pattern of lines and semi-connected nodes rather than an orderly gradient of intensity that radiates from one or multiple centres. Representations illustrate the experience of existing conditions and how - through tentative design proposals -future local conditions can be conceived that address sustainable development strategies applicable to an entire urbanized region.
