Falling international manganese prices have badly affected the South African manganese sector. Production and jobs have both been cut, suggesting that transport volumes are set to plummet. Figures from Statistics South Africa reveal that manganese production in February was 18.9% lower than in the same month last year, a bigger fall than for any other mining commodity, apart from iron ore, which suffered a 32.5% drop in output over the same period. Transnet is currently in the process of switching the country's manganese exports from Port Elizabeth to neighbouring Ngqura.
