Low iron ore prices have affected demand for Maurita-nian production. Although the government is not keen to release exact figures, this has reduced demand at the Port of Nouadhibou and on the 652 km railway that connects the port with the town of Zoue-rat, which lies at the centre of the iron ore industry. The 75% fall in international iron ore prices over the past four years has greatly reduced government revenues and slashed economic growth. The government is reluctant to see iron ore exports fall but, among the country's iron ore producers, it can only influence Societe Nationale In- dustrielle et Miniere (SNIM), in which it holds a 78.35% stake.
