Caofeidian is one of the Chinese ports that, last July, Beijing allowed to handle the Brazilian group Vale's fleet of very large ore carriers. A ban on the Valemax carriers had been imposed in 2012, on the pretext of safety and environmental concerns. The 400,000 dwt bulkers, which are the largest ever built, had posed capacity problems for China's bulk facilities, designed to cater for 300,000 dwt Cape-size vessels. The exclusion was seen as an attempt to keep Vale out of Chinese markets, however. The Valemax carriers also have access to berths in the Dagushan port area of Dalian, Qingdao's Dongjiakou and Ningbo's Majishan and Shulanghu terminals. Other ports are still forbidden from receiving the ships.
