As coal demand plummets across Europe, the dry bulk sector is looking for new business. Although biomass is viewed as a potential substitute, the volumes have not matched (and are unlikely to) those of coal. But in Denmark, which has led the way in the development of renewable energy, biomass demand is burgeoning as its power sector drags itself away from coal usage. With many of Denmark's ports now handling wood pellets, biomass offers a means to maintain, if not increase, cargo handling, according to Bjorn Christiansen, CEO of Danish Ports, the lobby group.
