It is truly amazing that ten years have passed since the global vocabulary was enriched with two new words: glasnost and perestroika. From the historical perspective, though, ten years is only a grain of sand in the desert of time. It was May 1985 when President Mikhail Gorbachev, unusually energetic for a Soviet leader and also unusually anxious about his international image, declared the new era at a Communist Party conference.
