The writers (Atkinson et al. 2003) investigated a case in which a full-face machine, tunnelling through a weathered Mesozoic mudstone, became clogged with high plasticity clay similar to that shown in the authors' Fig. 1. We showed that the action of the machine destructured aggregated clay platelets of the mudstone and released the high plasticity clay that originally had been strongly bonded into silt-sized aggregations. The clay typically had some 70% of total clay content of mixed illite, smectite and chlorite clay mineral species. It clogged all parts of the machine including the cutting head and the screw conveyor. We showed that the mudstone destructured and released clay only when worked at a water content close to the plastic limit. The drive had to be completed satisfactorily with compressed air which maintained the water content below the critical value. We recommended that prior to tunnelling, samples of the ground taken from the tunnel elevation should be subjected to tests that represented the actions of the tunnelling machine and for this we used a commercial meat mincer.
