Depuis son entrée à Trinity House en 1979 Nick Ward ajoué un rôle prédominant dans le développement des aides à la navigation de nouvelle technologie. Il a participé au développement et à la normalisation de la plupart des aides, qu'elles soient visuelles ou radio. Enrôlé dans les travaux de nombreuses organisations internationales, c'est toutefois pour sa contribution à ceux de l'AISM qu'il nous est le plus connu. Il a en effet commencé à nous faire bénéficier de ses hautes compétences en 1986 : longtemps président de la Commission des Aides radioélectriques à la navigation, il quitte ces fonctions lors de l'intégration de cette Commission à celle sur l'e-Navigation en 2006, dont il devient le vice-président.%Dr Ward joined Trinity House in 1979 as a Research Engineer after completing his PhD. Although employed by Trinity House, the research and development section works on behalf of the three General Lighthouse Authorities (GLAs) which provide marine aids to navigation (AtoNs) within British and Irish waters namely: Trinity House, the Commissioners of Irish Lights and the Northern Lighthouse Board. Since 1979, Nick has played a pivotal role in the development of a wide range of new technology AtoN, developed the ability and means to measure the performance of new and existing AtoNs and he has also led many international standardisation aspects. He has been involved with the development and standardisation of most marine AtoNs, covering physical aids, lights and radio aids, as well as their support systems; he has actively worked on the use of renewable energy sources for many years. He remains actively involved in the further development of new and existing AtoN systems (including DGNSS,AIS,eLoran, Radar and LED lanterns), along with helping to define their contribution to the IMO e-Navi-gation concept, in his role as the Director of Research & Radionavigation.
