Stable Sulfur Isotopic Evidence on Environmental Conditions of Gypsum Deposits in Dir El-Baraqan Area, North Western Desert, Egypt

The gypsum deposits in Dir El-Baraqan area, NW Desert, were divided into three zones: biolaminated gypsum, disordered selenite and swallow-tail selenitic crystals. Microscopic examination revealed that biolaminated gypsum is characterized by regularly alternating dark and light laminas, which probably was formed due to the seasonal changes in Dir El-Baraqan area. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) investigation, microprobe analysis and S-isotope composition were performed on gypsum samples. Stable sulfur isotope data showed that the gypsum deposits were characterized by δ~(34)S values ranging from +19.0 per thousand to +27.5 per thousand. In swallow-tail gypsum zones, the δ~(34)S values were chare -terized by a arrow range (from +19.0 per thousand to +20.2 per thousand which is considered as the primary phase in biolaminated zones, the δ~(34)S values exhibit variation between the white laminae (δ~(34)S = +23.55 per thousand and the dark la-mine (δ~(34)S +27.5 per thousand which is considered as the secondary phase. The high δ~(34)S values of dark laminae were attributed probably to the increasing activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria.
