Response of Some Radish Cultivars to Fertilization with Zinc and Various Nitrogen Sources

Two seasons experiment was carried out in the experimental farm of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Department, N.R.C., at Giza, Egypt, in order to assess the response of three radish cultivars to spars with zinc chelated and different sources of differences were obvious, with highly significant superiority of the Japanese cultivar in growth parameters (plant height, root length, and diameter, fresh and dry weight and yield), Fe, Mn, and un-saponifiable hydrocarbons in roots. Fertilization with zinc/and or N markedly increased most growth and chemical constituents over the control. However, increments due to N fertilization were more than those of zinc sprays. But zinc application improved the effects of N-fertilization. Zinc and urea together resulted in significant increases in growth characters, while differences among various N sources either alone or with zinc sprays on chemical composition of the three radish cultivars constituents were very slight. In order to obtain high yields of healthy, tasty and rich food radish roots, it would be advised to fertilize plants with 40 Kg. N/fed. given at two equal doses, after 3 weeks from seed emergence and after one month later, as well as spraying zinc chelated at the rate of 75 ppm on the foliage till run off. Red radish had more ascorbic acid, fatty acids, total soluble sugars and unsaponifiable matters than other radish cultivars under study.
