Weed Competition in the Field of Direct Seeded Rice

Two field experiments were carried out during summer seaon of 1998 and 1999 at Sharbas Village, Domietta Goveraorate, Egypt, to study the effect of the time removal of weeds on yield in direct seeded rice. Ecliinochloa crus-galli, Echinochoa colonum, Cypcrus difformis and Aania attenuate were the major weed species. Competition beyond 20 days after sowing caused drastic reduction in the number of panicles/m2 and grain yield. Grain yield of rice increased significantly with the increase in the duration of weed-free period. Density of weeds emerging between 20 and 40 days after sowing was high and could compete with the crop resulting in reduced grain yield. Hand weeding at three times (20 , 40 and 60 days) after sowing gave results equal to the hand weeding up to harvest (4.437 and 4.532 ton/feddan). While, hand weeding at two times (20 and 40 days) gave the second rank (4. 437 ton / feddan). The period during 20 to 60 days after sowing was found to be an important factor in crp/weed competition.
