摘要

The Bulletin of Science, Technology & Society invites proposals for contributions to five special issues planed for 2010. They will focus on the following themes.rnConsiderable attention has been given to the possibility of turning to Keynesian economic policies for overcoming the current economic crisis. Could these policies be used to help us make the enormous transitions required in the 21st century? These include overcoming fossil fuel dependence and global warming, making our cities more livable and sustainable in the face of growing urbanization, turning disease care into health care, reducing the costs incurred in the production of wealth by creating technologies more compatible with human life and the biosphere, making agriculture more sustainable, and much more. By offsetting fluctuations in the private sector of the economy with expansions or contractions of the public sector and focusing these efforts on the "big problems" we face, it may be possible to turn the present economic crisis into an opportunity. This special issue is intended to launch a broad discussion of these kinds of possibilities by exploring different options that could create a new kind of public sector regulated by Keynesian economic policies.
