In the fall of 1900, sponge fishers from the Greek island of Symi, near Rhodes in the Aegean, were returning home from their sponge fishing in the waters of Tunisia when a storm threw them in the harbor of Antikythera, a tiny island 40 kilometers south of Kythera. While waiting for the storm to dissipate, Elias Stadiatis, a sponge diver, discovered a wrecked ancient ship some 60 meters below the surface of the water. He bumped onto a mount of statues-horses, men, women, and vases.
