摘要

Eurydice dollfusi is an interstitial isopod Crustacean. It was recorded for the first time in Tunisia by DELAMARE DEBOUTTEVILLE in 1953. We have collected it, numerously, in north of Cap Gammarth (Gulf of Tunis). The morphological differences between the different species of the genus Eurydice are always appreciated with difficulty; therefore a detailed description of the species is given. The main morphological features of the species are: 1. the epimeral plates of sixth and seventh thoracic segments are prolonged into a spine; 2. the triangular shape of the pleotelson and the ornamentation of the setaa of the posterior margin; 3. the reduced length of uropods. These discriminate features has permitted us to establish a key to rapidly determine the different species of the genus Eurydice recorded in the Maghreb. Ethology. The Tunisian species has a double life: a nocturnal pelagic marine life and a diurnal interstitial life. The rhythm of activity is maintained in laboratory during a few days. Examination of the stomach contents has revealed the presence of crustacean fragments, annelid setae and chloroplasts. Swimming is very fast, by means of beating pleopods. The animals show numerous branched chromatophores on the tergal surface of the body ; these chromatophores contain a black pigment which display or contracts according to the environmental conditions. The study of chromatic behaviour of adults was carried out under artificial conditions; it showed that complexe display of dark pigment is obtained in 110 minutes. Ecology. The animals' distribution in the sand, according to depth, has been studied. We found that Eurydice are completely absent below depth of 30 centimetres. A granulo-metric analysis of the sand' samples is composed of grains was carried out to characterize diameter between 125 and 250 micrometers. The percentage of calcite present in 20 milligrams of sand sample is 24,5%. Using X-rays technique, in this same sample, we have determined the percentage of two other minerals, quartz (72%) and feldspath (3,5%).
