摘要

A very short text (one page), dated February the 4th 1944, is published here, providing a very good illustration of the style and philosophy of the French biologist Cuenot (1866-1951). He was interested not only by the evolution of organisms, but also by metaphysical considerations, such that he never entirely accepted the neodarwinian theory. As a biologist, he studied coaptations in insects, which were so perfect that he could not conceive of them as the simple result. of chance and natural selection. As a consequence, he added a teleological factor and a dose of finalism to explain coaptations and the formation of such complex organs as eyes. For Cuenot, organisms were not only chemical constructions but also result of life which is only transmitted by living organisms, and plays a role of anti chance. But he was still not satisfied, and the present text reveals the metaphysical anguish of the author, faced with the problems of life, death and ignorance of the causes of organismal evolution. From a biological point of view, this text presents several strange considerations (man assimilated to an ape, man resulting from a cerebral accident, the metamorphoses...). These would not be accepted today. It is clear that, in this text, the biologist is effaced by the poet-philosopher. At the end of his life, L. Cuenot appears in an agnosticism state, and attracted by pantheism.
