As the needs for materials research grows to solve world problems, U.S. government agencies and departments develop new materials programs to meet the challenges. Representatives from five government agencies or departments gave overviews of their programs and information on funding opportunities.rnHarriet Kung, director of science for Basic Energy Sciences (BES) of the Office of Science in the Department of Energy, provided a brief overview of the BES program. The research disciplines that the BES program supports-condensed-matter and materials physics, chemistry, geosciences, and aspects of physical biosciences-are those that help researchers understand, predict, and ultimately control the surrounding material world.
