Environmental problems plague all the countries of the world regardless of their level of development. In developing countries, where rising populations and economic transition make planning especially difficult, these problems can appear most challenging. In fisheries, a rise in demand often leads to destructive, short-sighted fishing practices, threatening the very future of the industry. Without careful protection measures and administration, and without an increase in spending for environmental management, many of the hard won gains of well-intentioned planners will be lost.
