摘要

As the title of Aimee Kendall Roundtree's monograph suggests, computer simulations have moved out of the realm of science fiction to become integral pieces of evidence both in the sciences and in the popular media. With spectacular detail, these dynamic images illustrate phenomena that are too small or too distant for the unaided human eye to observe. They have also become a fixture of evening news meteorology, sometimes predicting the course of a hurricane with preternatural accuracy. The fact that we invest so much meaning in these complex visual renderings of mathematical equations makes Roundtree's contribution timely and necessary for rhetorical intervention. Until this point, theories of how computer simulations function in the real world have been the province of philosophers whose cogitations have resulted in polemics such as Nick Boltrom's now infamous assertion that it is highly likely that we are currently living in a computer simulation. As a matter of thoroughness that marks her research, Roundtree dutifully recounts this line of inquiry; however, she wisely avoids positing an answer to the question of whether our shared reality is indeed a computer simulation on the scale of The Matrix or Descartes's brain in a vat.
