In the March 2010 focus on teaching column, we took a short tour of more traditional approaches to team-teaching: two or more instructors sharing the stage in one classroom, either within a specific discipline or across disciplines. In this column, our authors stretch the definition of team-teaching to encompass learning communities, virtual pairings, and multiple instructors teaching components of the same course. Regardless of the venue or the number of instructors involved, two themes stand out: The most successful efforts involve an intense level of communication and flexibility, and trust in one's fellow teachers is essential.
