White's purpose in The Nature of Leadership is to help the reader become a better "and even a great" leader (p. 1). He has written the book to help answer the question, "What does it take to lead successfully?" (p. 3). Unfortunately, the author does not entirely achieve his stated purpose. Chapter 1, "Become a Leader, a Better Leader," provides an overview of the book. In this chapter, White introduces the ideas of reptilian and mammalian leadership excellence. He elaborates on these concepts later in the book, and they are two of the building blocks in the "Leadership Pyramid" model he develops. According to White, reptilian leadership is analytical, and mammalian leadership is nurturing and participative. Dichotomies such as this one are not new to the leadership field. For example, Blake and Mouton (1964) discussed "concern for production" and "concern for people," a dichotomy that essentially captures the same dimensions. White uses his labels to illustrate different leadership styles so that they are accessible to individuals who do not have formal leadership training.
