Most college students, intimidated by expectations of sentence diagrams and complex rules, cringe at the prospect of taking a grammar course. In Rhetorical Grammar, Martha Kolln recognizes this apprehension and makes every effort to put students at ease. In the introduction, Kolln reassures readers by pointing out that people use the rules of grammar every day without thinking about them. She tells readers, "When you study grammar, you are studying what you already know" (p. 1). Throughout the book, Kolln works to build the readers' confidence and encourage them to think of grammar as a tool. Rhetorical Grammar is a textbook for undergraduate students, and Kolln keeps this target audience in mind by making the 322-page book user-friendly. She presents the material using a positive and functional approach. The glossary and index, as well as a separate punctuation glossary, are thorough and usable. These features, along with a handy reference guide printed inside the front and back covers, add to the book's value as a reference that students will be able to use for future writing assignments. The chapter titles clearly describe the content, and each chapter has a brief preview that lets readers know what to expect. Kolln intends the book to be read in sequence, as each chapter builds on information from preceding chapters. The 13 chapters are divided into five parts: "Understanding Basic Sentences," "Connecting with the Reader," "Making Choices," "Your Way with Words," and "Punctuation."
