In this paper I use a distinction between different attitudes to uncertainty to argue for a conception of ethical decision making that emphasises the role of judgement over rules. I distinguish between an 'objectivist' and a 'realistic' orientation to uncertainty. On the former, uncertainty is a function of our ignorance and is something to be overcome by the discovery of the objective rules that resolve conflict. On the latter orientation, uncertainty is a real property of the situations to which we respond in ethical decision making and cannot be erased by the application of rules. On this conception, decision making requires a non-rule governed response, the response of judgment. By using insights derived from Wittgenstein's work, I outline a model for the role of judgement that locates judgement within an account of the perceptual capacities by which we attend to and resolve uncertainty.
